The MOMS Trial (Management of Myelomeningocele Study)
The MOMS trial consisted of 200 mothers, half of whom would undergo surgery before giving birth, and half after. The MOMS trial results were published in 2011 in the New England Journal of Medicine. The trial indicated that there are numerous and significant advantages to preterm surgery. Included are, lower amounts of patients need shunts, and also a higher motor function at 30 weeks post birth. The only significant negatives were the preterm birth and possible surgery complications with the mother.
The MOMS trial was especially positive. It was originally intended to last ten years but was stopped after eight because the results were so indicative of the benefits of surgery before birth. These sort of results are very promising to doctors who are working constantly to advance this growing branch of surgical intervention. It is essential for the results of trials just like the MOMS trial to keep showing a positive outcome so significant advancements can be made in neonatal surgery.
